Lip Augmentation is a common procedure in our practice. Patients frequently are dissatisfied with the fullness or shape of their lips. Full lips tend to be associated with youth as they tend to thin with age and progressively lose volume and pigmentation in the process. Women are more prone to fine lines and deep wrinkles forming around the mouth which can also be a sign of aging. In a short office procedure you can improve the appearance of your lips with minimal discomfort and enjoy results immediately that can last up to two years.
At Oculus Plastic Surgery we use several injectable products to augment the lips. During your consultation we will discuss what type of results you would like to attain by using injectable fillers to augment your lips. It may even be helpful to bring a picture of the look that you hope to attain with his help. It is important to know that in all cases there is a limit to what results are appropriate in respect to your features. You may have some thing in mind that is limited by your own anatomy and I will explain these limitations so you have reasonable expectations from your procedure. Together we will decide the appropriate products and amounts to be injected and the product will then be prepared and customized for you. The lips are very sensitive area so we blend each filler with a numbing agent so that the patient feels very little after the first stick. I will use several injection sites to give you a custom look based on what was determined during your consultation. After your procedure, your results will be immediate and you can begin to enjoy your new look.
As with any injection there are risks to consider such as tenderness, swelling and bruising at or around the injection site. If any bruising or swelling does occur it typically resolves itself within a few days. Some patients put ice on the area immediately after the procedure to calm any post-procedure swelling or discomfort. Keep in mind that the local anesthetic will continue to provide relief for several hours. With that said there are some things that you can do to help you achieve optimal results even before you have your procedure. I caution my patients that using products that thin the blood which includes but is not limited to aspirin, products that contain aspirin and some dietary supplements can increase the likelihood of bruising and suggest discontinuing use* of these products for two weeks prior to your procedure. Taking a combination of supplements called Arnica Montana and Bromelain for a few days before and after your procedure can help speed healing and help the body to resolve any bruising faster while providing an anti-inflammatory effect. These products are offered in a kit and can be purchased at Oculus Skin Care Centre to be used in conjunction with any surgical procedures to help in this way.
